You know the saying, "If wishes were horses, beggars would ride." Well, in the case of Tensei shitara Ken Deshita, if reincarnation fantasy fulfillment was an anime genre, this show would be its king. The story follows our male lead, Ken, who after being stabbed in a back-alley robbery and left to die, wakes up in the body of a sword in a high fantasy world. And not just any sword, but the " sword of choice" for a busty elf maiden named Claymore. From here, the show hits all the key beats you would expect from a reincarnation isekai. Ken/the sword teaches Claymore the ways of the world, she helps him learn about his new abilities, and he falls in love with her. It's a pretty standard setup, but it's executed well enough that it's easy to overlook its faults. The biggest problem with Tensei shitara Ken Deshita is that it doesn't really offer anything new to the genre. It's a well-trodden path that this show is walking, and it doesn't do anything to stand out from the crowd. That said, if you're a fan of the genre, this is a solid entry that is worth checking out. The characters are likable, the action is decent, and the overall tone is fairly lighthearted. It's not going to change the game, but it's a fun ride nonetheless.
